Cars are my passion. I’ve been a gearhead my entire life…

For nearly the past decade, I’ve also been a lawyer. I’m very fortunate to work closely with a lot of folks in businesses throughout the automotive industry. This work has taught me that liability is a serious problem for service, repair, and performance shops, and one they rarely properly address. A few of the issues and questions my automotive industry clients regularly face:

  • How can I protect against a customer whose car breaks down for something I didn’t work on?

  • Am I liable for damage to a customer’s car while testing or tuning it?

  • What does my insurance cover, and what should it cover?

  • Is there a way to prevent an unhappy customer from badmouthing my shop online?

  • What’s my exposure for a car the customer failed to pick up on time?

I began turning wrenches with my dad from about the time I could crawl my way out into the garage. One of my earliest memories is sitting in the driver’s seat of my parents’ 1972 Pontiac Ventura and having my dad tell me when to push the brake pedal so he could bleed the brakes - I couldn’t have been more than 3 or 4 years old. I spent countless hours as a kid wrenching on everything from lawnmowers to my 1969 Honda Mini Trail. If it had an engine, I was tinkering with it. When I was about 5 years old, my brother and I pooled our birthday money to buy a beat up, rusted out 1962 Chevy pickup, which we worked on and drove around the property every chance we could get.

As I got older, my tastes got faster. I started drag racing as soon as I got my driver’s license. I learned a few early lessons in lawyering as I fought one particular ticket earned in my ’73 Chevy Nova. Adult me thinks racing is best kept to the track… but teenage me felt differently. Somewhere in my mid-teen years I bought my ’55 Chevrolet BelAir from the original owner. It is the project I want to get to but haven’t been able to quite find the time for, yet. For now, it’s a beautiful old blast from the past that is slow and comfortable for cruising with the whole family.

At 18, I bought my dream car: a rusty, barely running 1969 Camaro now known as 1SLOW69. Over the nearly two decades I’ve owned her, I’ve swapped in probably 5 different engines (and blown up a few), a handful of transmissions, and have been through every major component from bumper to bumper. At the time I am writing this, I just finished up a major round of upgrades, including a forged bottom-end 11.7:1 408 LS nitrous motor, built 4L80 trans with 4,000 stall, fresh built 12 bolt, and disc brakes at all 4 corners. I’m still working out the bugs but am looking forward to some consistent passes in the 9’s in the quarter mile.

Over the past 20 years of racing, I’ve made several hundred ¼ mile passes at strips throughout AZ and the Western US, dozens of ½ mile passes in events like NoFlyZone, and over 10 1-mile passes at the Colorado Mile.

Through Phocus Law, I’ve supported and sponsored many local race events including Shutdown Showdown, Beyond 1320, and more. Professionally, I represent many of the premier performance shops and manufacturers in the Southwest, as well as a great variety of other businesses in the automotive industry.
